Major Sacred Sites in Anuradhapura

Sri Maha Bodhi – The sacred Bo tree grown from a sapling of the original tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment.

Ruwanwelisaya - One of the most revered stupas in Sri Lanka, admired for its grandeur and spiritual significance. 

Thuparamaya – The first Buddhist stupa built in Sri Lanka, believed to enshrine a relic of the Buddha.

Jetavanaramaya - Among the tallest ancient brick structures in the ancient world.

Abhayagiri Viharaya – A vast monastic complex once home to thousands of Buddhist monks.

Isurumuni Temple – Famous for its beautiful rock carvings and serene setting.

Lankarama Stupa -  A historic stupa built by King Valagamba, with evidence suggesting it was once surrounded by a circular Vatadage structure. 

 Lovamahapaya (Brazen Palace) - A historic multi-storey chapter house built for Buddhist monks, originally constructed by King Dutugemunu and famed for its bronze-tiled roof supported by hundreds of stone pillars. 

Mirisaveti Stupa – A magnificent ancient stupa built by King Dutugemunu in the 2nd century BCE.
